This site offers a fast and easy way to look up a virtual tour for a class presentation. The site is organized so that teachers can quickly find an appropriate tour. I chose volcanoes and even though it was listed for grades 2-5, the site was a wonderful tour that would be appropriate to show as an example for older students. These sites would also be great for anyone who wanted to get a preview of a place they wanted to visit.

Posted in response to a blog about a teacher who was caught being verbally abusive to a five year old who was wearing a recorder.

A common definition of integrity is doing the right thing when no one is watching. I have been a soft skills corporate trainer for awhile and the big rage right now is emotional intelligence. It is basically a broad skill set of managing one’s behavior in a way that is positive and responsible. I think the old term was having good character. The teacher who was behaving badly towards a five year old obviously was not emotionally in control of the his/her behavior.

In the classroom clients/students are always watching us, so we are constantly modeling behavior and that behavior is always being witnessed. I substituted for a year before deciding to take teacher education courses and I quickly spotted many teachers who were in the profession for all the wrong reasons. Others were burned out, but needed to keep working. It happens in every profession, but it seems like schools are not always providing the soft skills training and support teachers need to be successful.

Do you ever feel like life just keeps speeding up with no end in sight?  I remember reading how technology was supposed to free humans from many tasks creating a Utopian society with lots of time for leisure activities. Instead it seems like so many of the time-saving devices have freed up time for more work not more leisure time. Maybe we need to slow down. If you agree, the following site might give you some ideas.

LearningNewTechnology

It is exhilarating and frustrating to learn new technology. There are always the initial starts and stops, but then ahhh—something wonderful appears on the screen. Before the widespread use of the GUI, the frustration came from using DOS, a foreign language known only to IT people. Now all of the IT challenged have access to a dizzying array of programs and websites to use with only general computer knowledge and skill.
